**Classwork**-

**Quiz over Bell Work - Week 6**(April 28 to May 2) was taken. "

**Cumulative Review #4**" from last week was returned and reviewed, and graded on completion. Homework from last week was also returned and reviewed, and graded on completion: (1) "

**Skills: Percents, Fractions, Decimals (BIP Inv4)**" and (2) "

**The Bag of Marbles Task**."

**Homework**- Complete "

**Area of Rectangles and Triangles, p.25**." Skip questions 5 Across, and 2, 3, 6 Down. Those problems do not have the height shown and require knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem in order to solve. We will preview this concept tomorrow!

First, students looked at the irrational number, square root of 3, which translates to "what number times itself equals 3?" The square root of 1 is 1. The square root of 4 is 2. Therefore, the square root of 3 must lie between 1 and 2. They tried several decimals before I broke out the calculator. After getting to the hundred thousandths place, 1.73205, the students could see how even the square of this number, 2.999997203, is close to 3, but not yet 3. We concluded that the square root of 3 is a non-terminating, non-repeating decimal. Therefore, when operating with irrational numbers, leave them in their radical form. How can you multiply a decimal that doesn't terminate or repeat (can be written as a fraction)? All we can do is get a very close estimate.

Students experienced how to use the

**Pythagorean Theorem**to find missing lengths of a right triangle. The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.**Homework**- Complete "

**Practice B: Estimating and Finding Area p.4**".

**Classwork**- Grade reports were provided listing all assignments for this quarter and scores. Copies of work were posted in the room to help students identify the assignment listed on the report. For students to participate in the summative math task next Thursday and Friday, students must be in good standing with their grades. Class time was provided for students to make up or redo assignments for extra credit. Students who were caught up with work, completed "Activity 37." This clears them of homework for the next two days. A new enrichment activity will be provided tomorrow for students who do not have to make up or redo work. All grade reports were collected at the end of class along with extra credit. Friday is the deadline for all make-up/missing work. We will continue to review for the final exam next Monday.

**Homework**- "

**Activity 37**" due Friday, May 9, 2014.
